A Scottish wedding is a traditional wedding performed by the people of the Scottish Highlands. Though it has been practiced for a several number of centuries already, there are still a lot of Scots who choose to celebrate their weddings the traditional way.

How Scottish Wedding Dresses Look Like

One of the distinguishing factors of this wedding tradition can be found on the dresses that the couple wears. The groom has traditionally worn a plaid fabric which covers him from the waist down and the rest of the cloth is worn over the left shoulder. The design of the fabric shows to which clan the groom and the groomsmen belong. Today, only lower part, the kilt, can be seen. Grooms now usually wear a coat and tie to cover their upper body.

As for the brides, they usually wear a white gown. Any design of gown will do, but a few touches of embroidery will distinguish it as being used in a Scottish wedding such as a Celtic knot. But what makes the wedding gown a truly Scottish wedding dress is the presence of a tartan (plaid) shawl around her shoulders or waist. The tartan’s design should be that of the groom’s clan. Wearing one symbolizes that the bride is already a part of the groom’s clan.
